Colorado StampColorado Public Computer Centers Project Launch

The Colorado State Library is collaborating with multiple program partners to serve the diverse population of Colorado. A Public Computing Center project will augment computer and broadband capacity in the state with a mixture of mobile computer labs, workstations, ADA-compliant workstations, and upgraded broadband connections. The Colorado State Library will use its expertise to provide training and encourage community outreach to ensure maximum use of investments to provide quality programs and expand access to broadband.

Understanding the Need

This program will fulfill a significant need for new public access computers in Colorado. Nearly half (46%) of Colorado’s computers have more than 3 years in service. In the rural and urban areas being served by this project, this jumps significantly. Of the 300 public access workstations in urban libraries, 176 are more than 5 years old. Nearly 60% of rural libraries have computers that are 3 or more years old.

With regard to demand for workstations, 81% of citizens surveyed by the American Library Association (ALA) report that they experience waiting time for public access workstations. In a survey conducted by the Colorado State Library, 82% of libraries said they needed additional computers.

Role of Participating Libraries

Our project will specifically align with three of the statutory purposes in the federal broadband stimulus grant program:

  • Provide improved access to broadband service to consumers in underserved areas.
  • Provide broadband education, awareness, training, access, equipment, and support to communities. Through the availability of mobile labs and our outreach program, we will serve not just libraries, but also schools, medical centers, healthcare, workforce development, and other key community needs.
  • Stimulate the demand for broadband, economic growth, and job creation by providing access and training.
