Broadband in Washington Libraries Project Launch Meeting
In August 2010, Washington State’s Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) was awarded approximately $54.5 million to offer affordable middle-mile broadband service, in addition to the $84.3 million already awarded in March 2010. Both grants are part of the federal broadband stimulus funding administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP).
The Washington State Library is collaborating with Washington libraries to create and develop LibraryNet, a statewide consortium, to ensure that Washington public libraries take maximum advantage of the high-speed broadband connectivity this project brings.
LibraryNet will include urban, suburban, and rural libraries, potentially impacting 363 end-user sites including service centers, central buildings, branches, bookmobiles, outlets, and other service points. Library systems, including some of the smallest and some of the largest, from across the state of Washington will be included.
